Monochrome Massif
A Resource Site for Philippines-based Photography

[13 March 2003]
I've been spending a lot of free time thinking about this blog / site. Much as I would love to build a self-centered testament to my own greatness, I doubt if that will bring people to the site. The web is about compromises it seems. I'd rather build a site that people will go to (because of the information presented), than build a monument that no one will take the time to see. So building a resource site is the best compromise for my affirmation-starved self.

This kind of thinking is typical of my background as a web developer. Here's a link to where I work--Slingshot Interactive.

The critical question is this: what type of information do I have is unique compared to the thousands of photography sites out there? It's a good way to trim the fat from any ambitious web strategy. In this case, it's simple. This site will cater to Philippine-based amateur photographers and the unique challenges they may face simply by practicing their craft here.

There is quite a bit of information already out there, and I don't really need to waste my time replicating it. I just need to localize it and make it applicable here. At least that's the plan.

Photography is a strange art. A painter is given license to deviate greatly from reality and create an image in order to express ideas and realities that stem from the depth of human experience. A photographer captures images. His craft is not about deviation from the real... but about capturing it. A good photographer has an inherent resonance with what is beyond the mundane world in which we live. He can capture a bit of the magic that is usually hidden from our eyes but is nonetheless there. His art is about showing a side of the world that the human eye too quickly dismisses and the human mind thinks is too small to ponder.

It's like capturing fireflies in a glass jar.

This blog is about my experiences as an amateur photographer trying to grow in this craft despite the limitations of being in the Philippines.

There are tons of websites out there about photography. This one focuses on issues that are unique to those who happen to be in the Philippines. Some information can be a rehash of existing stuff out there, but I'll try to slant them with Filipino-centric perspective as much as I can.
