Monochrome Massif
A Resource Site for Philippines-based Photography

[18 March 2003]
Annie of PH-PHOTO asked what the phrase "limitations of being in the Philippines" meant. Annie, you're right... the statement is misleading and can mean to say that it's a DRAG living in the Philippines. Sorry for the confusion. Let me be clearer:

I love this country... you can spend lifetimes exploring the place and never running out of new things to see or learn. I'm a SCUBA diver, and believe me, from the underwater wonders alone, I can spend a lifetime just diving around the country.

As a photographer, the difficulty is mostly a question of available resources. For one, I'm poorer than the average hobby photographer in ANY first world country. The second, it's not as easy to find equipment and books. A lot of the things I've seen online (like kits to make your own emulsion, wouldn't that be neat?) aren't just easy to come by around here. Thank God there's Hidalgo... but it's nowhere near being an Adorama or B&H photo. So let me be clear... I'm not whining about the country. I'm invigorated by the challenges of being a shutterbug here.

I hope that's clearer!

Just updated the supplier's page with the color coded icons. Much of the information is still guesswork at this point... until I get to finish all this stuff or get feedback from the people at PH-Photo. I find that the dialup speeds are just too darn slow... so I'm thinking of mirroring most of the site over at the Slingshot Server.

That will have to happen some other time since I'm stuck on a dial-up today.

Just got a few comments from some PH-PHOTO members. Added these suggestions to the tips page. :) Thanks Alistair for the suggestion, I've put your name there and a little white box to deliniate your excellent suggestion. Keep them coming.

I also got a few questions that are supposedly commonly asked around the board. I'll have to think which ones to address since a lot of them can be answered by existing websites out there. Again my motto: why reinvent the wheel?

There! It's finally complete. I just uploaded all the core pages of the site. Now I can't wait to get contributors or feedback. The site is still a bit slow because I forgot to separate the tables for faster loading. Sometimes even pros can goof.

In the coming weeks, I'm looking forward to getting some new articles online like recommended photo shoot trips and stuff like that.
