Cost of shipping. As it turns out airfreight through Johnny Air Cargo is anywhere from $6.50 to $8.50 PER POUND. That's no problem if you're sending a 3lbs lens. But what about a 75lbs enlarger??

Oh well. We learn the hard way. I guess I'll have to ship as much of it as I can through Balikbayan boxes. $150 to the Philippines. 45 days delivery time. Argh.

No longer a virgin. A couple of nights ago, I processed my first role of black and white film (with a lot of help from the wife). It wasn't quite as tough as I thought it would. My negatives came out fine except for a few streaks at the edges of the film. Here are a few things that I think I did right.
  • temperature control: Somehow the ice in the film canisters didn't work so well for the water bath. As it turns out my water bath needed approximately three trays of ice to get it down from 35 degrees (ambient water temp) to 20 degrees. I kept the water bath clean and uncontaminated. So as soon as it hit 20 degrees, I took almost half a meter to use in mixing my developer. That way, it was at temperature as soon as the bath water was.
  • more temp control: I wasn't too obsessed with keeping EVERYTHING at 20 degrees. I was only worried about the developer. However, I did keep all the chemicals (in their respective Sola bottles) in the water bath as I was waiting for the bath temp to drop. At the very least the other three chems' temperatures lowered slightly due to this. But I didn't even bother to stick a thermometer in them... only in the developer

I'll did inadvertently throw out my fixer in my excitement. Dang. What a waste. In any case, I'll remember to pour it back into the bottle next time.
